Tattoo Aftercare: The Complete Guide
Why Aftercare Matters
Your tattoo is essentially an open wound. The way you treat it in the first few weeks determines how well it heals and how vibrant the colors stay for years to come.
The First 24 Hours
- Keep the wrap on for 2-4 hours after your session
- Gently wash with lukewarm water and fragrance-free soap
- Pat dry with a clean paper towel — never rub
- Apply a thin layer of the recommended aftercare ointment
Days 2-14: The Healing Phase
Your tattoo will go through several stages:
Days 2-3: Slight redness and swelling is normal. Continue washing 2-3 times daily and applying a thin layer of moisturizer.
Days 4-7: Light peeling and flaking begins. Do not pick or scratch — let the skin shed naturally.
Days 7-14: Itching is common as the skin regenerates. Apply fragrance-free lotion to ease the itch.
What to Avoid
- No swimming (pools, ocean, hot tubs) for at least 2 weeks
- No direct sunlight — UV rays can fade fresh ink rapidly
- No tight clothing over the tattoo area
- No gym or heavy sweating for the first few days
- Never apply alcohol-based products on the healing tattoo
Long-Term Care
Even after your tattoo is fully healed (usually 4-6 weeks), protect it:
- Always use SPF 50+ sunscreen on exposed tattoos
- Keep your skin moisturized
- Stay hydrated — healthy skin holds ink better
